Abstract

The article is devoted to the history of projects SB-14 and SB-21 of the first Ukrainian passenger steam ships for small rivers, designed and built at the Leninska Kuznia (Lenin’s Forge) plant in Kyiv in 1934-1936, as well as project № 331 of the first passenger motor ship for small rivers, designed in Kyiv Central Design Bureau number 10 (CDB-10) in 1954. Attention is paid to the analysis of the main technical characteristics of the ships from the Project 331, the production of which was established at the Kyiv Shipbuilding and Repair Plant (KSSRZ) and several shipyards in Russia, also the article describes the peculiarities of operation of these ships, and discusses the identified shortcomings and possibilities for their elimination.

The article expresses concern about the current cessation of navigation on small rivers of Ukraine and discusses the possibility of building modern tourist passenger ships to resume navigation on such rivers using the most successful design developments implemented in the ships’ projects mentioned in this article.
