The article is devoted to the study of certain issues of professional training of water transport workers, namely the command structure of ship crews. The article examines certain aspects of the current state of educational provision of the mechanism of training, retraining and certification of seafarers in Ukraine. The article emphasizes that sea and river transport specialists should be familiar with the main provisions of regulatory documents in the field of international maritime law and international standards of the International Maritime Organization. Emphasis is placed on the fact that merchant shipping, changing in accordance with growing requirements, as well as taking into account the latest technologies, introduces new requirements for specialists in the maritime industry, in particular for the command structure of the crews of sea vessels, gradually increases and updates the requirements for professional competence.
